In my experience the Maxtor drives have been very reliable with only one dying at all after a number of years and one after four years or so getting a few bad sectors. Overall Review: I have had a lot of Maxtor drives over the years. Insanely quiet (I had it in an open enclosure next to me and still couldn't hardly hear it.) Product page says around 3.2 dB under normal access, which is quieter than practically any harddrive and can't be heard over any fan you are likely to have.ĪTA133 is still pretty good (in fact, few drives can utilize SATA1.5 noticably better than ATA133 and none can truly utilize SATA3.0.)įor its pricerange and speed, it has good seek times and latencies.Ĭons: Gets a tad warmer than one would expect from a low end drive, though doesn't go anywhere near its maximum operating temperature (60C.) I mention this as a con because if you get it for a passive external enclosure like I did you need to ensure it will be cooled well enough to not tear up or get a drive made to take more (a notebook drive would be ideal.) I believe Seagate hasn't actually changed Maxtor's production processes.)

Pros: It's a Maxtor (for most of us this is a name synonymous with reliability.
